Writing II

Some additional writing
Here are a few more pieces I've written...enjoy :)

The New Ruth Club
This picture goes with the poem...

New Ruth, NV
"What is there to do in Ruth, Nevada?"
I asked the friend of a friend.
I had just arrived in Reno en route to Ruth.
They had just come to pick me up from the airport.
"Nothing" came the reply, "Well, there is a bar."

Actually, I came to find out, there are two bars.
And 700 people.
The New Ruth Club is closer to where we are staying.
So that is where we hung out, right next door, for 30 crazy college students.
But still there is nothing to do.

The guys are all over watching the game at the New Ruth.
Don't be fooled--the place is older than the name implies.
And the scene is straight out of a movie.
An old western, perhaps.

Yes, an old western--imagine a deserted street.
With tumbleweeds blowin' down Main Street.
That's Ruth--the school shut down.
Not enough students in these days of low copper prices.
This here's a mining town.

The New Ruth Club has a run-down facade.
A pay phone a couple of rusted out Chevy trucks sit in front.
And inside, it is hardly any different.

There's a sweet bartender looking after her patrons.
Knowing more than she says.
Making sure that all is taken care of.
She'll even float you a free drink every now and then.

The shuffleboard table doesn't need quarters.
Because the scoreboard no longer works.
You'll have to keep your own score.
If you aren't too drunk.

The pool table has an odd lilt.
But there are always quarters under the lip for the next game.
The town drunk has a Ph.D. in Beerology.
He'll heckle the pool players on his way to the bathroom.
From his regular stool at the bar.

Two TVs are on mute, country music fades over the scene.
Laughter and flirting, gossip and news are constantly present.
Occasionally the kareoke machine is brought out.
And everyone ins invited to sing out of key.
And with out melody, is there any other way?

This has been what there is to do.
For the last week and a half.
I believe it will continue for another 4 and a half.
Yes, this is what there is to do in Ruth, Nevada,
for a bunch of geology students.

a new start in an old life--
